Stress @ Work

Christmas Trees 101:WATER THEM!
By now, some people have had their Christmas trees up for a while (maybe even since Thanksgiving) while others are still in the process of decorating and lighting up those great smelling branches. If you fall into the former category, then hopefully you’ve been keeping your tree well hydrated! One of the worst things that you can do during the holiday season is to let the water in your tree stand get low, it only takes seconds for your Christmas lights to spark a drying needle and your whole tree could be engulfed in flames!
If you fall more in the latter category, you need still be careful when it comes to keep your tree watered. Cities to Celebrate in!
Normally, Christmas is associated with huddling by the fireplace with the family. But, spending your Christmas, or days leading up to Christmas, in a festive city can be an excellent experience.

Cutting Costs in the Kitchen
Meeting all the financial needs that come with raising a family can be tolling and requires a certain level of strategic, economic planning. MoneyWatch.com recently published an article on ways to curb costs at the supermarket, a tactic often overwhelming to many household heads.
A prime example included in the article is replacing breakfast cereal with oatmeal. The author, Sarah Lorge Butler, explains that oatmeal is just as nutritious, more filling, and averages out to around half the price. At around 1 to 2 dollars a dozen, eggs are another great buy, can be cooked to fit into any meal, and are protein rich.
Butler suggests carbohydrate rich pastas with store-brand sauce for an economical dinner, with a side of fresh or frozen vegetables, which are always at an economically attractive price. Roast chicken and beans are two protein rich foods that are also inexpensive. Butler says that when it comes to fruit, ignore the pricier options for the just as nutritious, fractionally priced classics like apples and bananas.

Lose that Jet Lag
Anyone who travels a considerable distance over the holiday season – or over any season for that matter – knows what a damper a bad case of jetlag can put on a trip. The possibility of the fatigue, grogginess, and discomfort that comes from toying with your body’s sense of time can sometimes be enough for a person to reconsider a trip, especially if the time spent visiting is on the shorter side. However, there is no need to let jetlag get the best of you, because there are ways to combat the syndrome. A recent article by Reader’s Digest compiled a list of surefire ways to lessen the effect of flying across time zones.
The best thing you can do to prep for the change in time is to begin to acclimate ahead of time. Beginning 3 or 4 days before your flight slowly begin to eat or sleep earlier and earlier – or later and later depending on the direction you are headed. This gradual transition will be exponentially less tolling on your body then a sudden change.
If you are especially prone to jetlag you may want to consider forgoing your on flight meal. Airlines serve meals in accordance with the time zone of departure, and therefore eating on the plane can prove to be counterproductive to your transition.
Food can also be used to your advantage however. If sleeping on the plane will be beneficial for your schedule, have a carbohydrate-rich meal before the flight. Science shows that Carbs can help induce sleep which is especially helpful if you are prone to airplane discomfort. After the flight, have a protein rich meal to maximize your alertness through out the day.
Working out for at least thirty minutes a day – especially cardio – while on your trip will also do wonders for how you feel and sleep.

Farmers Market Extravaganza
Head over to the Seasons Four in Lexington on Tuesday the 23rd for a great chance to get some local ingredients to include in your Thanksgiving Day feast. The Lexington Farmers Market is hosting an indoor market, complete with free hot cider for all who attend.
